JOB TITLE:  PART-TIME ACADEMIC TUTOR                                            

DEPARTMENT:  SPECKMAN TUTORING & LEARNING CENER (TLC), Carol Jones Writing Center (CJWS), Speech Communication Center (SCC)

SALARY RANGE: $13.40 - $18.64 PER HOUR                                         

FLSA: NON-EXEMPT

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  Director – Tutoring & Learning Center  

SCHEDULE DETAILS:  Part-time (not to exceed 19.5 hours per week)

 

Position Summary

The Part-time Academic Tutor works with students to support them both in their coursework and their development as learners. In addition to subject area proficiency, this position requires the capability of negotiating multiple subjects in a dynamic setting; the ability to comprehend and execute verbal and written directions; the competencies of sound judgment and initiative when working in the absence of supervision; and the capacity to maintain confidentially within the TLC.

 

Essential Job Duties

  • Assists students in developing the concepts necessary to complete students’ academic goals.
  • Conducts him or herself in a professional manner and in accordance with OTC Policies and Procedures.
  • The tutor assists students only in the subject(s) for which he/she has qualified based on grades and faculty recommendations.
  • Tutors enrolled as an OTC student must maintain a good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.00 in the subject area(s) tutored.
  • Seeks to encourage and build student esteem and shows respect to all students regardless of the level of knowledge or course level.
  • Freely seeks assistance from other tutors, supervisors, textbook resources, and other instructors in his/her subject area whenever he/she has the least uncertainty about responding to a student’s need or question.
  • Facilitates student learning; he/she never simply provides answers. The mission of the TLC’s tutoring program is to “empower students to achieve success.” This philosophy must begin with the tutor.
  • Actively works toward College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certification by attending meetings and completing assignments to further his/her tutoring skills. CRLA Certification Level I must be obtained within the tutor’s first full semester of employment, and subsequent levels of certification must be obtained each year afterwards.
  • Friendly and courteous to all students and staff.
  • Responds readily to the supervision of all TLC staff members.  (The TLC is open 60 hours/week; supervision of the TLC rotates between staff members.)
  • Accepts the responsibilities of being a TLC tutor. Such responsibilities include arriving on time, filling out paperwork, and keeping his/her supervisor informed of any schedule conflicts (giving a minimum of two-day notice if at all possible).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the tutor’s supervisor.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as Microsoft Office Suite).

 

Education Requirements

  • Accounting (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in ACC 220 or ACC 225 and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Anatomy & Physiology (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in BCS 132 or BCS 165 and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Biology (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in BIO 100 or higher and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Chemistry (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in CHM 101 or CHM 160 and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Computers (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in CIS 101 or higher and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Languages (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in courses in language subject area and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Math (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in MTH 130 or higher and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Physics (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in PHY 120 or higher and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Programming (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in CIS 120 and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Academic Coaches (Must be in good academic standing, must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Writing (Must be in good academic standing, must have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in ENG 100 or higher and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Speech (Must be in good academic standing and have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in COM 105 and obtain a letter of recommendation from relevant instructor)
  • Letters of recommendation can be waived if you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in the subject you are applying for or are a native speaker of the non-English language you are applying to tutor.

 

Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Experience working within an academic setting or in customer service.
  • Previous involvement with academic coaching.
  • Flexible availability.
